Understanding the Disease of Addiction
Addiction is a complex disease that doesn’t discriminate – it affects people from all walks of life in Austin, from high-achieving students to successful professionals, and everyone in between.
Families should know the following about addiction:
- Addiction is a chronic disease, not a moral failing or lack of willpower
- It often co-occurs with mental health issues
- Genetic, environmental, and personal factors all contribute to developing addiction
- Recovery is possible with the right support, treatment, and ongoing care
Austin's Substance Abuse Landscape
Austin may be known for its live music and vibrant culture, but like many densely populated cities, it’s also a hotbed of substance abuse issues. We’ve seen firsthand how addiction affects individuals, families, and our community as a whole. From illicit substances to prescription drugs, the face of drug addiction in Austin is diverse and complex.
On the other hand, Austin is home to a robust network of treatment options, support groups, and professionals dedicated to helping people find their path to recovery. And that’s where we come in.
“Our priority is to get people well by developing ethical treatments rooted in science.”

Dual Diagnosis and Mental Health Support
Treating More than Substance Use
Our clinical team understands that suffering from a dual diagnosis condition can add a layer of complexity in receiving treatment.
Some of the most common questions we encounter are: Which came first, the mental health condition or the addiction? Which should be treated foremost?
In our experience, persons with a dual diagnosis respond better to treatment methods that address mental health in conjunction with substance use disorders. This form of treatment not only improves recovery outcomes, but also advances physical, emotional, and general functioning throughout the treatment episode and beyond.

Family Involvement in Addiction Recovery
Our family program is designed to educate families on addiction and recovery while moving through the treatment process.
In many cases, families unknowingly contribute to the problem through codependency and enabling, even though their intentions are born out of love and concern.
Recovery improves when all who have been impacted by addiction accept help and take action to heal. As with any disease, some individuals are affected more than others, and it will be important for those impacted to start their own journey of healing.
“Our goal at Burning Tree Lodge is to embrace the family system as quickly as possible, because we believe that early intervention for the family is critical to the recovery process.”

Aftercare & Relapse Prevention: Transitioning Back to Austin
Recovery doesn’t end when treatment does. As we come to understand the unique needs of the individual, we utilize a wide network of clinically supportive services to foster a robust, recovery-affirming discharge and aftercare plan. We put a lot of focus into aftercare planning for our Austin clients to help them build a solid foundation for lasting recovery.
Aftercare planning may include several elements:
- Ongoing therapy sessions
- Alumni support services & weekly meetings
- Developing a relapse prevention plan
- Finding sober activities and communities in the Austin area
Embracing the Culture of Austin in Recovery
One of the beautiful things about getting sober in Austin is the opportunity to rediscover the city through fresh eyes. Austin’s vibrant culture can be a powerful ally in recovery:
- Music Scene: Attend live shows and festivals (sober tent options are often available)
- Outdoor Activities: Hike the Greenbelt, swim at Barton Springs, or kayak on the Colorado River
- Food Culture: Explore Austin’s famous food scene (BBQ and tacos, anyone?)
- Creative Arts: Engage with Austin’s thriving arts community through workshops and events
Recovery isn’t about giving up your life – it’s about reclaiming it. And Austin offers countless ways to do just that.
