Inpatient Addiction Treatment Using Mindfulness in Recovery®
The inpatient program at Burning Tree Lodge combines Mindfulness in Recovery® with evidence-based clinical care.
Together, these create a powerful recovery program that helps our clients achieve significant emotional, mental, and spiritual breakthroughs.
What Exactly Is Mindfulness?
Simply put, mindfulness is the practice of being fully present and engaged in the current moment, without judgment. It involves paying attention to our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment with openness and curiosity.
In the context of addiction recovery, mindfulness helps individuals become more aware of their behavioral patterns (and what contributes to them), cravings, and disruptive thought patterns.
This increased awareness allows for better decision-making and emotional regulation, which are crucial skills in maintaining sobriety.
How Do We Combine Mindfulness with the Twelve Steps?
Our Mindfulness in Recovery® program uniquely combines mindfulness practices with the traditional 12-step approach. This integration enhances the effectiveness of both methodologies.
While the 12 steps provide a structured framework for recovery, mindfulness offers practical tools for managing day-to-day challenges. We blend these two approaches because we’ve seen first-hand how it helps our clients develop a more comprehensive set of life skills for maintaining long-term sobriety and improving overall well-being.

What Are the Core Concepts of Mindfulness?
The Mindfulness in Recovery® program focuses on three key areas:
- Mindful Awareness – Practicing mindful awareness helps individuals recognize their thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations in real time without getting caught up & carried away by them.
- Non-Judgmental Acceptance – Taking this perspective of self compassionate non-judgement and acceptance allows clients to observe their experiences objectively – without the criticism, intense shame, and self-blame that often accompanies addiction.
- Discovery & Connection with Core Values – Identifying & connecting with core values helps individuals align their actions with what truly matters to them, providing motivation and direction in recovery.
How Does Mindfulness Support Your Recovery?
There are a myriad ways that mindfulness is helpful in your recovery journey, and even more benefits in how you approach life in general. Perhaps most important for recovery, mindfulness helps to consciously observe your cravings without automatically acting on them, creating space for healthier choices.
Emotional regulation skills developed through mindfulness help in dealing with difficult feelings that often trigger substance use.
Additionally, these techniques are powerful tools for managing and reducing stress, helping you to cope with all of life’s challenges without the need for drugs or alcohol.
Mindfulness offers several benefits across all areas of life:
- Develop a mentality of inner peace, resiliency, and joy in your recovery
- Reduce stress and anxiety
- Improve attention, mental stability, and focus
- Promote emotional intelligence & balance
- Live your life with more meaning and purpose
- Discover insights into your personal habits & behavioral patterns
Mindfulness & Life Skills in Aftercare & Beyond
The skills learned in our Mindfulness in Recovery® program extend well beyond the treatment period, supporting long-term recovery and overall well-being.
Our clients learn various mindfulness techniques, including meditation practices, mindful breathing exercises, and body scanning. These practices can be easily incorporated into daily life, providing ongoing support in maintaining sobriety and managing stress.
Cultivating these skills better equips individuals for the reality of navigating life’s challenges, helping you to build a more fulfilling life in sobriety.
“Our genuine happiness comes from doing things we feel good about, not from doing things that make us feel good.”
